2019: A Year in Review
If 2019 were a race, we finished but it wasn’t necessarily a personal best. Looking back on 2019, we wanted to hit a few key milestones:
- Run our first half-marathon together in 2:20 or better (www.armyrun.ca)
- Log 365+ km on Nike Run Club
- Travel somewhere new
- Take a CPR/ First Aid Course
The only goal we didn’t hit was logging 365kms. This goal was intended to support training for the half marathon, which it did… until someone decided to park their truck in the back of our little Hyundai a week before race day. Ultimately, our training schedule fell apart and only half of us ran the half, which we obviously hadn’t planned for. Running alone is not the end of the world but when you train with the support of a partner you take a lot for granted – everything from pacing each other, pushing that little extra to end a kilometre, hydration reminders and so on now rest with the individual.
Life got in the way and before we knew it, we had 10 days to run 100km – not impossible, but highly improbable!
However we did travel somewhere new… a few times! We made it to such destinations as Montebello QC, Poland (namely Warsaw, Krakow and Zakopane) and finally a work trip/ vacation to Yellowknife NWT.
The First Aid/CPR Course was fascinating and motivated us to evaluate what we take on hikes, camping and even in the car.
Overall, like any race there are some hills and valleys, areas you can really pick up the pace and spots where each step feels Herculean – we learned a lot, had a great time together and are very excited to start the new year.
Here we go!
